Software of Geopolitics: Empathy as a Vital Tool of Diplomacy and Mediation

In this brown-bag lunch lecture, Matt Waldman will explore the much-neglected role of empathy in international affairs, and argue empathy has immense potential to reduce violent conflict.

Matt Waldman is a Senior Lecturer at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and Senior Policy Fellow at the Henry J. Leir Institute. He is also Advisor to the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Director of the Center for Empathy in International Affairs and an Associate Fellow of Chatham House – The Royal Institute of International Affairs.

Matt has previously served as a senior mediation advisor to the United Nations Envoys for Afghanistan, Syria and Somalia. He was also a Fellow at the Belfer and Carr Centers of Harvard University’s Kennedy School and a Visiting Fellow at Cambridge University in the UK. He trained as an international lawyer and has held senior foreign affairs positions in the UK and European parliaments.
