Elementary Educator for Sunday Morning Classroom (Cambridge, MA)
First Parish in Cambridge is currently seeking an Elementary Educator to support Liberal Religious Education at our Unitarian Universalist Church on Sunday mornings, along with occasional additional events. You would develop and implement lesson plans, lead values-based conversations with children, create theme-based experiential elements such as art, music, games, and ritual, and support other teachers. You would be needed for the RE class during church, as well as early morning childcare before church, and might assist with other religious education events, such as special family events and field trips. The hours needed on Sundays are 8:45-12:45, plus 3 hours of prep time during the week. The weekly rate is $175, with additional pay for additional events, as they come up.
This classroom is mixed age, 6-12 year olds. All classrooms have a lead and a support teacher, so no one is alone with a classroom. We work collaboratively and are always sharing ideas and curriculum, so you wouldn’t be alone in planning either. This is a creative, fast-moving program, and our highest value is connecting and helping everyone to feel respected and cared for, so we need a teacher who can read students and make shifts easily. The ideal candidate would be an experienced educator, comfortable creating and leading group activities including music, art, and games. They would have familiarity working with neurodiversity, be enthusiastic about stepping forward to support social justice, and a knowledge of or willingness to learn about Unitarian Universalism.
Duties include:
· Deliver care for Sunday early morning program and RE during church service
· Develop and implement lesson plans
· Supervise volunteers and any assisting staff
· Create a warm and welcoming environment for children and parents
· Set up and clean up the elementary classroom
· Socialize with parents after the service
· Maintain attendance log for the elementary classroom
· Implement safety policies
· Communicate with parents regarding any specific child needs
· Help with A Time for All Ages during the service on Sunday mornings
· Assist at family events, holidays, field trips, and all-church special events
· Research stories and activities supporting the lesson plans, along with the DRE
