As we kick off a semester full of collaborative opportunities, we wanted to take a moment to (re)introduce you to our Collaboration Rooms. The Collaboration Rooms are the seven rooms on the 5th floor that groups can reserve in advance for collaborative work. They all have whiteboards and monitors for you to connect to your laptop… and most of them have windows! Since we have a limited number of rooms, we have policies in place to make sure that as many groups as possible have the opportunity to reserve a room.
Here are the basics:
- The rooms can only be reserved by groups of 2 or more. If you’re planning to study alone, you are welcome to use the rooms on a first-come, first-served basis, but you cannot reserve one just for yourself.
- Each room can be booked up to 4 hours a day and up to 3 times a week per group.
- You must provide the names of all group members when you make a reservation.
- If the room is left empty for more than 15 minutes during the reservation period, it will be made available to others on a first-come, first-served basis.
You can find the full room reservation policy on the Collaboration Room page. Please take time to read through it before you book a room, as violations may result in forfeited reservations or the revocation of your booking privileges. You can always email us at hhsl@tufts.edu if you have any questions. Happy collaborating!
P.S. If you’re not sure that a collaboration room is right for your needs, hop over to our Room Reservation Wizard to see what spaces might be good for you.
Exciting things have been happening on our 5th, 6th, and 7th floors! We’re working on increasing the number of study spots in the library as well as giving you more flexible work space options.
Here are some of our latest updates:
We added 32 new study carrels to the 7th floor along with 40 new chairs. We’re awaiting the delivery of 8 more carrels for the 6th floor. The 7th floor carrels will have desktop power soon. For now, you can drop your cords through the hole on the top and plug in at the outlet under each desk.
We’ve also added two new standing desks–one on 5 and one on 6! The desk on 5 currently only works as a regular desk, but the new adjusting mechanism is coming soon.
Tufts carpenters have built a beautiful standing-height counter on the 5th floor. We’re waiting for the power strip to be delivered and, once it’s in, you’ll be able to plug your devices in at counter level.
Stay tuned for more updates!
Join us Wednesday, December 2nd at noon in SK516 for our second Sweet Talks @ Hirsh event! We’re excited to welcome Dean Nadeem Karimbux. Bring your lunch and enjoy hearing about Dean Karimbux’s career path, the choices he made along the way, how his field has changed during his career, and advice he has for the next generation of professionals that we are educating here at Tufts—all in a casual, conversational manner with time for a Q&A.
Coffee, tea, and dessert will be provided by the library!
On March 1st, we started a room booking pilot program, in response to student requests that we make some of our library rooms bookable. We designated seven rooms on Sackler 5 as our collaboration rooms, set up an online reservation system, and let the collaborating on projects and presentations begin!
We’re pleased to report that the pilot was popular and that we will be continuing it through the fall semester.
Here are some stats, for bookings made between March 1st and May 30th:
Total bookings: 272
Unique users: 100
Most popular rooms: 502 and 504
Most popular day of the week: Wednesday
Average group size: 3 people
Average booking length: 3 hours

Happy Collaborating!

Looking for a scanner at the Hirsh Health Sciences Library?
Check out room 524 on the 5th floor near the Library IT Service Desk.
We have three scanners that are completely free and easy to use!
The book scanner allows you to scan directly to e-mail, USB, printer, or Google Docs.
Not sure how to use it? Ask at the Library IT Service Desk on Sackler 5.
Have you noticed the new SHARP digital whiteboard in Sackler 502?
By plugging a thumb drive into the USB port on the wall, you can pull up documents, PDFs or presentations and easily add notes and highlighting. Use your fingers to underline, make diagrams and highlight key points during group study sessions and save the modifications back to your USB drive to review later. Here’s a brief demo video to introduce you to the board and its capabilities.

And if you’re not sure you understand how to use it, don’t worry! The instructions are posted on the wall to the right of the screen. The Library IT Service Desk is also available to contact Educational Media should problems arise.
