Fall 2024 Semester User Guidelines

The Bray machine shop will have open shop hours for the Fall 2024 semester.

All users of the space are responsible for reading, understanding, and following the safety guidelines available on the safety tab above. You are required to complete the safety quiz prior to your first visit.

You can only book fabrication time on machines you have been trained on by Bray staff.  You can request consultation and training appointments with Bray staff in advance.  You are also welcome to stop by during shop open hours to speak to a staff member.

If you are part of the Mechanical Engineering department, you can submit requests for Parts, Mechanical Analysis Testing, and Motion Capture Lab Services. Due to the increased demand, we are prioritizing courses and research within our department.

If you are outside of the Mechanical Engineering department, you can contact the lab coordinator, Samanta Carias, with questions and special request.

Our Mission:

The Bray labs and shops are part of the Mechanical Engineering department with the goal to support student hands on learning. It contains collaborative spaces for curious members of the greater Tufts community seeking to bridge the gap between academic theory and professional practice. We encourage diverse perspectives, backgrounds and interests to understand problems from different angles. We teach a broad variety of methods across design, fabrication, and research. Bray continually evolves to meet the needs of our users and to incorporate emerging technologies giving students the agency to tackle complex problems of the modern world.

Black Lives Matter:

We at Bray believe that Black Lives Matter and have always mattered.

Black Lives Matter and it is egregious that this fact must be proclaimed and is not self-evident. In the sphere of engineering, design and innovation, we wouldn’t be where we are as a society without the contributions of Black people – contributions made despite being hindered by systemic barriers. There was a time when Black people couldn’t work in spaces like Bray and even after they were legally allowed, their presence was rejected in those spaces. This has perpetuated through the ages and we are still facing similar problems given the lack of representation in STEM. There has been a huge disservice to the advancement of engineering, design and innovation by the lack of Black people in those fields. Diverse perspectives, backgrounds and interests are necessary to understand problems from different angles and discover what might have been otherwise overlooked.

At Bray, we are dedicated to recognizing biases in ourselves and the systemic bias within our organization. We will actively work towards unlearning those biases and continuous organizational improvement. We strive to have an inclusive space where diversity is celebrated, and equity is supported.
