Global Food+ 2017: 24 Speed Talks on the Nexus of Food, Agriculture, Environment, Health, and Society
On Friday, February 24th, the Harvard Weatherhead Center for International Affairs will host an event called Global Food+ 2017. At the event, twenty-four Boston scholars will give 7-minute “speed talk” presentations on their recent research at the nexus of food, agriculture, health, society, and the environment. Speakers hail from a variety of disciplines including anthropology, economics, political science, history, sociology, engineering, biology, and environmental sciences, and their talks will cover a diverse range of topics including cultural practices and veganism, irrigation and food security, farm subsidies, GMOs, cropland productivity and climate change, food contamination, food waste, the environmental consequences of meat consumption, and rural poverty in Africa.
Following the talks will be a keynote address from Dr. Shenggan Fan, Director General of the International Food Policy Research Institute. Dr. Fan received the Hunger Hero Award in 2014 and in 2016 was appointed to the Lead Group for Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement by Secretary General Ban Ki Moon. He also serves as an advisor on food policy to multiple national governments. His address will focus on the ways in which Boston researchers can contribute to bettering the understanding and outcomes of agriculture and food systems at a global level.
The event will run from 12:30-4:30 PM and is open to the public.
