Empow Studios Summer Camp Positions

Empow Studios teaches kids 7-15 years old in STEM in classes after school and weekend, and in camps during the summer throughout the Greater Boston area. Our topics include coding, robotics, video game design, film & animation, digital design, and Minecraft.

Summer Camp Directors lead a team of instructors to inspire and educate youth to create projects using today’s latest computer technologies and engage campers with games, outdoor play, and other fun activities. $25-$30 per hour.

STEM Camp Instructors teach one tech class of typically 10 students per week and ensure that students have a great time learning and building cool stuff. $18-$25 per hour. 

Both roles are full time approximately 8am-4:30pm M-F. Camps run 6 to 10 weeks, June 26-Sept 1. Camp locations run throughout the Greater Boston Area

StAAR Center Graduate Writing Consultant Position

Position Description

Graduate Writing Consultants work one-to-one with both undergraduate and graduate students on a variety of writing activities. Primarily, this takes the form of academic papers for coursework, but we also work with students on personal statements, conference papers, and longer projects such as senior theses, master’s theses, and doctoral dissertations. We are also embedded in the Fulbright application process in early fall. Depending on interest and program need, consultants may also have opportunities to lead or help develop workshops, writing groups, writing retreats, or training for other writing consultants. Most Graduate Writing Consultants will work on the Medford campus, but SMFA students may apply to work on-site at the SMFA Fenway campus.

Our program emphasizes collaboration and process as crucial aspects of becoming a more engaged writer. Since our work is conversation-based, strong interpersonal skills are vital. We are looking for nonjudgmental, collaborative consultants who are good listeners and committed to writing and learning as process. Our approach is informed by feminist and anti-racist pedagogies, and our community values diversity in all forms, especially when related to identities such as race, gender, disability, nationality, and language that have historically been marginalized by language-based oppressions. Compensation, Time Commitment, and Training

Compensation:

  • $21/hour to start, including paid training, ongoing professional development, and preparation when appropriate. 

Training Commitment:

  • Mandatory, paid training workshop intensive, held in-person on the Medford campus. Fall 2023 Dates: August 21 – 25. 

Academic Year Time Commitment:

  • Minimum 5 hours per week for at least one full academic year (hours during intersessions/summer are optional), some evenings and weekends desirable
  • Ongoing, paid, mandatory professional development and staff meetings throughout the academic year
  • Modality for 2023 – 2024 academic year, including training, is in person.

Qualifications

  • Tufts graduate student in any discipline from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (including SMFA), the School of Engineering, or the Fletcher School
  • Outstanding interpersonal, verbal communication, and listening skills
  • Commitment to and willingness to learn more about anti-racist praxis and writer-focused, process-oriented tutoring approaches
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Experience with ANY of the following: 
    • tutoring writing, especially for college, high school, or adult students
    • teaching or TA-ing a class with a writing component (including lab reports)
    • teaching or tutoring bilingual/multilingual students or adults
    • tutoring other subjects, working informally with writers (including classmates) on their drafts, editing publications, or other related work (please explain in cover letter)

Instructional Design Assistant (Fall 2023 Internship)

The Instructional Design Assistant will be working closely with our Instructional Design team to assist in the development and delivery of online and blended programs offered by Tufts University.  The intern will have the opportunity to work in various aspects of online course design and will gain valuable experience working with educational professionals, educational technology, and the technical side of course development.

Internship Description
The Instructional Design Assistant will be working closely with our Instructional Design team to assist in the development and delivery of online and blended programs offered by Tufts University. Job Description

Tufts Center for Engineering Education and Outreach (CEEO) runs summer programs for students entering 1st through 9th grade. There are two workshops that happen at the same time and a series of different tasks involved with making those workshops run efficiently. We are looking for a summer employee who will be responsible for all of the behind the scenes work to make this operation run smoothly. Tasks will include preparation of registration materials, early morning check in (8AM) each Monday, communication with parents regarding registration and daily updates on workshop progress, ordering lunch, scheduling teaching assistant (TA) shifts and covering shifts when needed, taking photos and uploading them, and other tasks needed to make sure the workshops are successful.

Experienced Outdoor, Early Childhood Educator Cooperative Forest School

Cooperative forest school is a forest school morning program in Stoneham, MA for children ages 2-7, in the process of state-licensing with the Department of Early Education and Care.  Founded by two parent-educators and artists, we came together through a commitment to play-based outdoor education, and disability justice.  Cooperative Forest School we are committed to the principles of community care, open play, collaboration, exploration, nurturing and environmental stewardship.

We are looking for an Experienced, Outdoor Educator to join our adventure in care and community and to lead our program, 5 days a week. This is a 20-25 hr/week position with the possibility of additional hours.

Duties

  • Lead the Cooperative Forest School program 5 mornings per week during the school year.
  • Make sure children are safe and supported.
  • Observe children’s behavior and learning, and foster problem solving, collaboration, confidence building and imagination by providing scaffolding experiential learning based on those observations.
  • Maintain visual and auditory supervision of children at all times to ensure their safety in the forest and on any field trips
  • Help children resolve and negotiate conflicts when they arise; support development of self-regulation, impulse control and coping mechanisms through supporting conflict resolution; use consistent techniques in guiding children’s behavior.
  • Develop strong positive partnerships with families, students, and possible co-teachers.
  • Use positive, appropriate and supportive language with children.
  • Embrace a wide variety of weather conditions as pedagogical inspiration. 
  • Communicate clearly and respectfully with children, caregivers, and other teachers. 
  • Coordinate with Cooperative Forest School core team on planning, preparation and organization.

Qualifications

  • Experience in early childhood education and/or outdoor/nature education programs.  
  • Strong emotional intelligence, including empathy and listening skill set.
  • Loves working with young children and is energetic and passionate about working one-on-one with children, as well as with groups of children.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of hazards and risk assessment as related to the environments of young children.

  • Dedication to place-based education and a passion for exploring the natural environment. Working knowledge of local flora, fauna, and seasonal changes is a plus!
  • Current Emergency First Aid and Child CPR certificate (or willing to obtain quickly)

  • Familiarity with the principles of disability justice and community care.
  • Reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Formal studies in the core subjects of Early Childhood Education 
  • At least one to two years preschool teaching experience
  • Knowledge of forestry, environmentalism, conservation, herbology, any and all Earth based / nature based wisdom or knowledge 
  • Interest in collaboratively creating alternative approaches to schooling and community-building.
