The SCA applicant selected for this internship will gain valuable experience in museum collections and archives management while also proving public access to the historic photograph collection of Longfellow House – Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site.  Specifically, the intern will have opportunities to digitize, complete missing catalog information and assist with research requests relating to the photograph collection which includes over 11,500 photographs and negatives ranging from 1840 to 1970 and encompassing a wide range of photographic processes and topics. The historic photograph collections provide critical information about all aspects of the history associated with Longfellow House and its inhabitants from roughly 1850 to 1950.  In addition to depicting the people associated with the house, the photographs include information about their associations with other famous figures (e.g., Charles Dickens), nineteenth century fashions, architecture (including important changes to the Longfellow House and grounds), aspects of Longfellow family life, and important images of foreign travel collected by family members.  The applicant selected will also be asked to identify an area of interest for a small research project to enable the intern to discover some of the connections inherent in the park’s collections.  Each week, the intern will work in partnership with the NPS Curator, Archives Specialist and Museum Technician to care for the collections, rehouse textiles, monitor environmental condition and fill research requests.

Manager of Public Programs [Museum of Arts and Design]

Position Description: Reporting to the V.P. of Education and Programs, the Manager of Public Programs develops, plans, and implements adult public programs at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), including lectures, symposia, cinema screenings, performances, workshops, in-gallery artist-centric programs, and special projects.

The Manager of Public Programs is responsible for establishing an innovative program schedule that reflects and builds on MAD’s unique identity as a museum that celebrates the creative process through which materials are crafted into works that enhance contemporary life. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a deep knowledge of contemporary art, design, and culture, as well as familiarity with emerging and established practitioners across a variety of disciplines.



Responsibilities Include:

– Developing and planning a robust and diverse roster of programs that foster engagement with MAD members and other established adult audiences while developing connections with new audiences to the Museum.

– Building public engagement through both traditional and innovative programs that connect the Museum and its activities to the culture at large and offering participants the opportunity to learn through a variety of avenues from participatory and experiential to academic and scholarly activities.

– Identify trends in contemporary culture, focusing on art, craft, and design, and create a dynamic forum to explore these developments

– Organize both large and small-scale programs for a variety of adult audiences that include both specialized art and design communities as well as the general museum-going public.

– Collaborate and support artists, designers and makers through traditional and interdisciplinary practices.

– Oversee all aspects of program planning, administration, and implementation, including program budgeting and supervising program staff and interns.

Job Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree required, MA preferred; 3-5 years of experience producing public programs in a museum or cultural setting; deep knowledge of contemporary developments in the arts, design, performance, and cinema communities; demonstrated creativity in developing new models for programs and visitor engagement; strong research, writing, and communication skills; flexible and collaborative personality; experienced in public speaking; excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; supervisory experience; budgeting, billing and record keeping experience; computer and database experience. Evaluator [Detroit Institute of Arts]

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Evaluator’s role is to develop, implement, analyze, and report evaluation studies designed to assess audience attitudes, behaviors, interests, knowledge, and skills. The Evaluator is expected to contribute most significantly to the Department’s goal of providing efficient and useful answers to staff questions about audience attitudes, behaviors, knowledge, motivation, and skills.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Work with staff across every division of the museum to plan and implement front-end, formative, and summative evaluation related to exhibitions, programs, and services
  • Collect visitor data through observations, interviews, focus groups, and other means as needed
  • Conduct high-quality quantitative and qualitative analysis of collected data
  • Report results of evaluation projects in useful formats and facilitate sessions to aid stakeholders in incorporating the findings in their work and to increase the impact of empirical evidence about visitors on the museum’s daily operations
  • Increase the level of staff knowledge and skills related to evaluation methods and findings, as well as performance improvement techniques
  • Advocate for the usefulness of evaluation as a tool for performance improvement, facilitate positive attitudes toward the value of evaluation, and promote evaluative thinking
  • Develop connections with local community members and organizations to facilitate the recruitment and participation of a diverse range of individuals in evaluation projects
  • Manage the work of contractual evaluators and data collectors, serving as liaison between the external contractors and DIA staff
  • Develop and track budgets for projects funded by the museum’s operating budget, restricted funds, and grant funds
  • Organize and archive data collection instruments, results, and reports to facilitate transfer of organizational knowledge for future projects
  • Publish and present reinstallation evaluation methods and results within the broader field of visitor studies

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

The Evaluator possesses the following training, skills, and knowledge or the equivalent:

  • At least a Master’s degree in Evaluation, Museum Studies, Instructional Technology, Educational Psychology, or a related field
  • Knowledge of evaluation methodology and statistical analysis, especially as applied to museum settings
  • At least four years of experience in visitor evaluation, evaluation of educational products and programs, or applied social sciences research
  • Excellent organizational skills, written and verbal communication skills
  • Aptitude with statistical software, especially Excel and SPSS

General Summary of Responsibilities: The assistant/associate curator of education works with the curator of education to develop and implement interpretive programming for The Trout Gallery—the art museum of Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Position reports to the curator of education.

Education and Experience Required: BA or BFA in studio art, education, art education, museum studies, art history, or related field is required, and a deep commitment to art education. Museum experience and an MA/MFA a plus. Excellent interpersonal and oral communications skills, and ability to work as a team. Experience teaching and/or working with children in an educational setting. Ability to work productively with diverse constituencies, including schools, community agencies, institutions, and the public. Skilled at developing and marketing events and programs. Supervisory experience, web and social media design, and a strong studio art background are desirable.

Supervisory Responsibilities: student interns/docents, student work-study employees, student ambassadors.

Essential Functions:

Works with and assist the curator of education to:

  • Develop specific interpretative programs and preparation of written material and packaging of educational materials based on experience and education level;
  • Implement a strategic plan for community outreach initiatives that fulfills the museum’s mission;
  • Manage reservations and delivering tours to K-12 school group visitors and audiences enrolled in summer programs;
  • Develop teacher packets, family guides, and other education materials;
  • Develop and manage after-school and Saturday programming as part of the overall education calendar;
  • Manage the museum’s participation in selected local festivals and events;
  • Supervise and train student interns;
  • Form strategic alliances with teachers and administration at area K-12 schools and organizations and institutions in the Carlisle community;
  • Support social media and digital initiatives;
  • Maintain statistics and database related to education programming; and
  • Maintain and organize art supplies, equipment, and space in the museum’s Mumper-Stuart Education Center.
