Fletcher welcomes EU and State Department Fellows and Diplomat in Residence

Anyone aspiring to a diplomatic career should take note of several government fellows programs that annually provide Fletcher students access to practicing diplomats. It’s an honor and pleasure for our community to welcome this group of international affairs practitioners each year.

The European Commission nominates the annual EU Fellow at Fletcher, who consults with the Academic Dean on a policy-focused course or seminar on a topic of central importance to the European Union. It’s a great opportunity for our students to benefit directly from the firsthand experience of an expert in European affairs. The EU Fellow also meets with student groups, provides career guidance to students interested in Transatlantic affairs, and delivers guest lectures and conference remarks throughout the year.

Fletcher also collaborates with the US Department of State to bring the Fletcher US State Department Fellow to campus each year. The State Department Fellow will often teach a semester-long course as well as hosting a speaker series, and works in conjunction with the Office of Career Services to offer professional guidance on diplomatic careers to students.

In addition, Tufts is a host institution for the Diplomat in Residence Program, an initiative with the Department of State that sees a senior Foreign Service Officer placed at the university each year. Tufts is one of only 17 institutions in the US to host this program. The Diplomat in Residence advises students on State Department internships, the Foreign Service exam process, and general preparations for diplomatic careers.

Fletcher’s government fellows are excellent in-house resources for those intent on a career in diplomacy or just interested in expanding their knowledge of diplomatic trade craft.
