Summer outreach

I get asked a lot if summertime in admissions is a slow season, with most students and faculty spending the summer months away from Fletcher. It’s certainly much quieter around the place, but overall it’s just as busy for us as the academic year, just differently busy. We’ve always done the odd recruitment event in the summer, but in recent years it’s really picked up, and I can usually count on attending at least three or four significant events per summer.

Summer admissions events

Far from being a period of laid-back indolence, the summer months have increasingly seen a pretty full roster of Fletcher admissions events. This year is no different! Prospective students should obviously feel free to visit us in Medford at any point, but there are also many upcoming opportunities to meet our staff, as well as current students and alumni, throughout the world this summer.

Commencement!

And just like that, members of the Fletcher Class of 2019 are officially alumni! It doesn’t seem that long ago that we were busy convoking the academic year, and here we are already recapping the season’s most anticipated finale outside of Westeros. On the weather side of things, there’s mixed news to report. For Saturday’s Class Day festivities, we lucked into probably the nicest day we’ve had all spring. Sunny, warm, and just generally the kind of day that makes you want to hang around outside. For Commencement itself on Sunday, less so. While the big tent provides good protection from the vicissitudes of the sky, the ground makes itself felt in a downpour, too, and there are likely a few muddy pairs of Maglis and Manolos due for a cleaning this week.

Open House!

Today I attempt an advanced blogging maneuver: squeezing in a post about Open House on the big day itself. Welcoming over 160 admitted students to Fletcher, and ensuring they have the best day possible of attending classes, degree sessions, Career Services and current student panels, faculty luncheons, research center round tables, student organization meetings, campus tours, housing presentations, and financial aid sessions is an all-hands-on-deck scenario. We’re fortunate to have not only a team of seasoned Open House veterans here in our office, but widespread support from many other Fletcher offices, as well as faculty and current students. I’m decked out in my best Fletcher orange for good luck!

Some reassurance from an old friend

I had the great pleasure of catching up with my former colleague, blog mentor, and friend Jessica the other day. To long time readers who miss her voice here, I’m happy to report she’s doing very well, and misses you all, too. Among the many things we chatted about was the ongoing scandal in the undergrad admissions process at several major US institutions, and Jessica was kind enough to blogify her thoughts on the subject.

Deadline reminder: one week to go!

Regular readers may have been happy to have a bit of a respite in recent days from my incessant deadline reminders. Repetitive? Definitely. Tedious? Perhaps. Important? Absolutely! One reason January 10 is the largest deadline of the admissions cycle is that it’s the final deadline for applicants who wish to be considered for scholarship aid, i.e. almost everyone. There are a few more deadlines to come in February and even early March (most of those specific to individual degree programs), but our ability to consider those applications for scholarship support is extremely limited.

Happy holidays, and a few reminders

A quick reminder here that our office (and Tufts at large) is closed today and tomorrow for the Christmas holiday, as well as next Monday and Tuesday for New Year’s. Whether or not you observe these particular holidays, I hope the season is providing you with a bit of downtime, and hopefully the chance to spend some of it with family and friends. At least some of our staff will be here on the days between these dates, so you can still feel free to be in touch with any questions, and we’ll respond as soon as possible.
