Welcome, Januarians!

It’s official: those who started at Fletcher this past fall are no longer the newest students here. Our class of Januarians arrived today, and they’re currently working through a full orientation schedule. We had a chance for a quick hello at this morning’s welcome breakfast, and will look forward to a bit more face time between now and the weekend.

Financial planning tips from Madhuri

Madhuri is enjoying a well-deserved break after finishing her first semester at Fletcher. The prospective student experience is still relatively fresh for her, though, and she put together a number of helpful tips for financial planning (and you can expect additional future posts related to scholarship and financial aid on this blog). As you prepare to submit your application and await decisions, getting going on financial planning is an important process on which to focus.

Deadline reminder: one week to go!

Regular readers may have been happy to have a bit of a respite in recent days from my incessant deadline reminders. Repetitive? Definitely. Tedious? Perhaps. Important? Absolutely! One reason January 10 is the largest deadline of the admissions cycle is that it’s the final deadline for applicants who wish to be considered for scholarship aid, i.e. almost everyone. There are a few more deadlines to come in February and even early March (most of those specific to individual degree programs), but our ability to consider those applications for scholarship support is extremely limited.

Happy holidays, and a few reminders

A quick reminder here that our office (and Tufts at large) is closed today and tomorrow for the Christmas holiday, as well as next Monday and Tuesday for New Year’s. Whether or not you observe these particular holidays, I hope the season is providing you with a bit of downtime, and hopefully the chance to spend some of it with family and friends. At least some of our staff will be here on the days between these dates, so you can still feel free to be in touch with any questions, and we’ll respond as soon as possible.

End of year odds and ends

Mid-to-late December is a bit of a strange time here in Admissions, as there’s a feeling of things simultaneously accelerating and winding down. We’re busy preparing for the arrival of our new “Januarian” cohort in just under a month, and we recently released decisions for our Early Notification applicants. Have I mentioned before that we also have another major application deadline approaching on January 10 (I think I must have at some point)? That’s still plenty of time for those of you working on your applications, but you should be very much in the weeds with it by now. We’re still around and available to answer whatever questions you may have as the deadline gets closer, but be aware that Tufts (inclusive of our office) will be closed for the holidays on December 25, 26, and 31, as well as January 1.

Early notification decisions, or the lack thereof

Thanks to all of you who made the effort to submit your applications for Early Notification consideration. By this time of year it’s been a while since our office has read applications in significant numbers, and the “EN” round is a good warmup for the larger pool to come at the January 10 regular deadline. Mostly, though, it’s just fun to read applications. Applicants to Fletcher are an interesting and inspiring bunch, and although we can’t admit everyone, I learn something new from virtually every application I read.

Protips from John after (nearly) a semester

I’m frequently astonished by how quickly semesters seem to go by for our students. While I feel like we just welcomed our first-year Graduate Assistants to the Admissions team, here they are already in the midst of finals with a full Fletcher semester nearly behind them. I asked them to think about any advice they’d give to prospective students, or things they wish they’d known ahead of their arrival at Fletcher. John was kind enough to provide an insight for each week he’s been at Fletcher.
