While a blog isn’t always the ideal platform on which to promote upcoming events, this Thursday’s virtual “Summerfest” is a worthy exception.

Read MoreToday, a quick announcement about a cool upcoming event. “Fletcher Reads the News” has been a long-running event series hosted by the Institute for Business in the Global Context (IBGC), and this Friday will see the latest installment, in virtual form.
Read MoreNot too long ago I wrote about the proliferation of cybersecurity-related curriculum and activity at Fletcher, including a brief mention of the annual Cyber 9/12 Strategy Challenge hosted by The Atlantic Council. Fletcher teams have taken part in the competition for three or four years now. They’ve consistently returned invigorated by the experience, and on occasion a bit awed by the level of technical and policy expertise to which they were exposed at the event. It’s struck me as a great learning experience for the growing contingent of Fletcher students interested in cyber issues.
Read MoreFletcher is always busy with various events, particularly in the middle of the semester. This week has seen two of the more prominent ones of the academic year, with SIMULEX 2019 taking place this past weekend, and the 2nd annual Decolonizing International Relations conference happening as I write this.
Read MoreIt’s hard to imagine more of a toe-dipping into the admissions travel season than attending a fair here in town for my first recruitment event of the fall. That’s how the schedule worked out this year, though, and so Monday night I headed over to Boston University for the Idealist grad fair, always a pretty enormous event, given the number of universities in the Boston area.
Read MoreLots going on this week, as is typical with students settled in to classes and the semester in full swing. Here’s a roundup of some of the highlights.
Read MoreNew student arrival: check. Orientation: check. Official start of classes: check. Things are basically underway here for the 2019-2020 academic year, but without a good convoking, it doesn’t quite feel like the year has officially started. That will all change on Friday with this year’s Convocation ceremony. Convocation is always equal parts formal and celebratory, full of academic pageantry and the good energy of a community happy to be gathered together for the first time of the year. It feels a bit more special than usual this year, though.
Read MoreI get asked a lot if summertime in admissions is a slow season, with most students and faculty spending the summer months away from Fletcher. It’s certainly much quieter around the place, but overall it’s just as busy for us as the academic year, just differently busy. We’ve always done the odd recruitment event in the summer, but in recent years it’s really picked up, and I can usually count on attending at least three or four significant events per summer.
Read MoreFar from being a period of laid-back indolence, the summer months have increasingly seen a pretty full roster of Fletcher admissions events. This year is no different! Prospective students should obviously feel free to visit us in Medford at any point, but there are also many upcoming opportunities to meet our staff, as well as current students and alumni, throughout the world this summer.
Read MoreGeographic Information Systems (GIS) are amazingly powerful tools. Take a few moments to study a well-designed map, and you’ll be amazed by the amount of information it can simultaneously convey. Way back in my own Fletcher student days, I enrolled in the inaugural offering of GIS for International Applications at Fletcher, mostly out of curiosity and the desire to pick up the rudiments of a new skill set. While I haven’t gone on to do further GIS work, and while modest would be a charitable description of the mapping project I produced in that course, it did leave me with an understanding for and appreciation of the explanatory power of contemporary mapping technology and technique.
